December on Long Island is pure magic. Streets glow with twinkling lights, harbor villages bustle with holiday parades, and families gather for treeâlighting ceremonies. As the year winds down, wardrobes change over to warm sweaters and heavy coats, table linens get their annual workout, and party attire emerges from the back of the closet. Between celebrations, shopping and winter weather, laundry becomes an extra burden. At Spin Sudz Laundry Service, we’re here to lighten your load with convenient pickup and delivery, so you can savor the season.
There’s no shortage of holiday cheer across Nassau and Suffolk counties. Here are some highlights to mark on your calendar:
For one weekend, downtown Port Jefferson transforms into a Victorian wonderland. The Charles Dickens Festival celebrates its 29th year with costumed characters and carolers turning the village streets into a living stage. Festivities include a creative study featuring giant “Christmas Carol” ghosts, Mrs. Cratchit’s Craftworks, Tiny Tim’s Train Station and an enormous walkâin snow globe. Santa makes appearances throughout the weekend, and there are parades on Saturday and Sunday. It’s a nostalgic experience straight out of Dickens’ pages.
If you’re looking for smallâtown charm, check out these local tree lightings:
Farmingdale Village Tree Lighting – On Tuesday, December 2 at 6 p.m., gather around the gazebo on the Village Green. Enjoy music by the South Shore Brass Ensemble, holiday carols sung by the Farmingdale School Chorus, and complimentary hot cocoa and cookies.
Brookhaven Town Christmas Tree Lighting – Friday, December 5 at 6 p.m. brings this popular celebration to the Holtsville Ecology Site. Expect costumed characters, live music, free candy canes and hot chocolate as Santa arrives by helicopter.
Glen Cove Downtown Holiday Festival – On Saturday, December 6, visit Village Square for a holiday market with local vendors and food, culminating in a tree lighting at 4:45 p.m.
Station Yards Holiday Tree Lighting (Ronkonkoma) – Also on December 6, this event includes a holiday market from 2–6 p.m. and a 5 p.m. tree lighting. Santa leads the countdown and local makers sell handmade gifts.
Long Island’s nautical heritage shines at night in December:
Freeport Holiday Boat Parade – The Nautical Mile sparkles on Saturday, December 6 at 7 p.m. as boats decked out with lights and decorations sail along Woodcleft Avenue. Spectators can watch from waterfront restaurants or along the street.
Long Beach Electric Light Parade – On Saturday, December 13 at 6 p.m., antique cars, fire trucks, floats and bicycles wrapped in lights travel west along West Beech Street. Parking is available at the Long Beach Ice Arena, and shuttle buses drop off visitors at the parade start. Come early and support local shops and eateries.
For driveâthrough or walkâthrough displays, these experiences bring the holidays to life:
Riverhead Holiday Light Show – From November 14 – December 31, Splish Splash water park in Calverton becomes a oneâmile driveâthrough light display. Shows run Thursdays through Sundays (plus extra nights) starting at 5 p.m. and cost $25–35 per car. It’s considered Long Island’s premier driveâthrough holiday tradition.
LuminoCity Fantasy Winter Fairyland at Eisenhower Park – Running November 7 – January 1, this walkâthrough transforms 14 acres with more than 50 glowing sculptures, including a 50âfoot “Castle in the Sky” and a 40âfoot Christmas tree. Attractions like the Lumi Express holiday train and Snow Dream Slide make it perfect for families.
Magic of Lights – Jones Beach State Park – Starting November 21 and running nightly through January 3, this driveâthrough show features holiday scenes and characters illuminated by LED lights and digital animations. Hours are 5–10 p.m. Sunday–Thursday and 5–11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with a closure on December 31. Magic of Lights turns Jones Beach into a glowing path you enjoy from the comfort of your car.
With parties, travel and guests, December creates unique laundry challenges. Here’s how to stay on top of it:
| Tip | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Prep your table linens | Holiday meals mean tablecloths, napkins and runners see more action than the rest of the year. | Wash linens ahead of time and store them neatly pressed. Use gentle cycles or our professional service to avoid shrinking delicate fabrics. |
| Care for party outfits | Dresses, suits and special garments often contain sequins, velvet or delicate lace. | Read care labels carefully. Use garment bags for delicate items or let Spin Sudz handle dryâcleanâonly pieces. |
| Handle stains quickly | Red wine, gravy, chocolate and hot cocoa can leave stubborn stains. | Blot (don’t rub) spills immediately, preâtreat stains, and send them to us within 24 hours for the best chance of removal. |
